Air Conditioner Sizing

Filed Under Business, Home, Industry | Leave a Comment

Regardless of how well an air conditioning professional comes recommended or what kind of credentials he holds or how many years of experience he has, there is no way for him to take a quick look around your home and be able to spout out the size of the air conditioning unit that you need.

Anyone that claims that they can do it is making an educated guess at best, and if their guess is wrong then it will end up costing you a lot of money in excess electricity for the entire life of your air conditioner or even shorten the life of the air conditioning unit.

There are numerous national studies that have determined that well over half of the homes in the country have incorrectly sized air conditioning systems.

There is only one correct way to determine the proper size for home air conditioners and that is by using the Manual J calculations.  The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) have publish Manual J as the accepted standard within the industry and every certified air conditioning professional that is worth his salt should be intimately familiar with at least the fact that it exists and that it is the standard.

The Manual J calculation takes into account such factors as the shape and orientation of the home, the climate in the area, the level of insulation within the home, window locations, number of residents within the home, temperature preferences of the occupants, and a lot more.

When speaking with potential air conditioning contractors about installing a new system for your home, be sure to ask if they will be providing you with a Manual J cooling load calculation as part of their estimate.  Any contractor that is unwilling or incapable of doing the calculation should be crossed off of your list.
