The importance of looking out for and obeying Emergency Lights

As citizens we hope we never have to see emergency lights shining in our rear view mirrors at us. Ambulances, fire engines, and law enforcement are given vehicles with emergency lights as a way to warn citizens that they are approaching. These outdoor lights are often bright in color, and red, blue, or white. As drivers we are instructed in driving school what we are to do if we do happen to see these lights heading straight for our vehicle. Even though you were not paying attention in driving school it is important to understand the process that occurs from the time you see these flashing lights.
If you see the out door light of a police vehicle you must first determine whether or not they are attempting to pull you over or whether you should move aside so he can reach the person he is attempting to stop. This is done easily if you slow down and pull off to the right side of the road. If an officer is intending to pull you over then he will typically pull up behind you and park with his red and blue lights still on. If you were not the intended target of the police officer then he will pass by your vehicle without any attention to you.
If you happen to see the flashing lights of a fire truck or an ambulance, be sure that you pull over to the right and stop until he has cleared your immediate area. This will allow these emergency vehicles to get where they need to be sooner, and can even help save someone’s life. There is a reason that these vehicles are hurrying to their destination, there is an emergency that needs attention. Do not be responsible for delaying them any longer than they should be by not moving your vehicle out of the way when you are required to.
